About Skerries Community College
Characteristic Spirit of the School
The characteristic spirit of the school is one of care and attention to all the needs of our students. This is encapsulated in the philosophy behind the mission statement of the school, which is:
Mission Statement
Our school promotes the development of the whole person, within the Christian context. With the assistance of parents, we aim to develop responsible citizens. Students, irrespective of economic circumstance, gender, religious or philosophical outlook, race or social situation, are welcome to join us in the pursuit of knowledge.
Our ethos
Our ethos is based on personal responsibility, interdependence, respect for people and respect for property. Our school seeks to cultivate integrity, the necessary skills for life, and, valuing discipline and punctuality, to facilitate the best in the academic and non-academic area. We value our traditions, our heritage and we seek to be a caring and compassionate community where justice and truth are central elements” (Agreed by all the partners during the initial stages of School Development Planning in 1996 and reviewed in 2006). This Mission Statement is displayed on the wall outside the Principal’s office.
Our Philosophy
The philosophy of the school is a living one and can be seen in the teaching and learning in the school, the promotion of extra-curricular activities, the pastoral care system in the school, the supports and interventions provided for students with both academic and non-academic needs and the caring and protective atmosphere which permeates the College.
The school encourages high academic achievement and it’s students regularly achieve Leaving Certificate and Junior Certificate grades which are higher than national averages.
Any of our students with learning difficulties benefit from the care and attention of our dedicated Learning Support Team.
Our first year intake every year benefits from our Mentor system where senior students adopt a small number of first years each and support, guide and care for them for the duration of their first year.
All of our students have a range of staff to support them: Class Tutors, Year Heads, Deans, Counsellors, Chaplain and Academic Monitors. There is a school Oratory, which is a place of peace and quiet away from the hurly-burly of school life and where students are encouraged to attend reflective and commemorative services. Mass is celebrated in the oratory during Lent and at other times during the year. Another of our gardens, Tír na nÓg, located beside the Oratory, is dedicated to the memory of students we have loved and lost.
